Step #5: Describe Your Photos with a Distinct Personality

Now that you have a clear idea of what your personal USP is as well as the persona that you’ve based around it , you need to stay in character. When you’re taking photos, which have that quirky personality-based angle, make sure everything is consistent. Make sure that your description fits the personality conveyed by the photo.

You have to understand that people are not stupid. People can tell a fraud a mile away. People can tell if you are just playing a role, or you are the real deal.

On Instagram and anywhere else, authenticity is king. So there has to be no disconnect between your description and the personality behind the word choice and the themes that you raise and the range of emotions raised by your pictures. This creates a sense of emotional intimacy between the viewer and the content and, ultimately, you end up branding your viewers to the extent that they feel that they know you.

The key here is to get people to feel that they have some sort of emotional investment in your brand. That’s how you build a community around your content. You have to understand that most people can post great photos from time to time, but that doesn’t make a brand. What makes a brand is the intensity of the sense of emotional investment people have when they enjoy your content.

Step #6: Engage with Other Niche Personalities

After you’ve been posting your photos for quite some time, and you’re getting quite a bit of love from Instagram, you then need to start working on taking things to the next level. You need to start engaging with other Instagram personalities in the same niche. These are people who cover the same types of photos that you normally post. The big difference here is that these individuals have their own distinct personalities.

You then engage with them. You call them out. You ask them questions. You ask for their opinion.

Whatever you do, don’t just say, “Oh, that’s a nice photo.” That does not make you stand out from the crowd. That does not make you look special. You have to approach this with a high level of confidence because if you’ve been doing this for quite some time, you are already an expert. You already have some measure of credibility and authority. Don’t act like somebody who doesn’t have these assets.

When engaging with other niche personalities, you let them know that you have a certain level of confidence because you yourself are an authority and is worthy of respect. If you come at them from this perspective, chances are quite high that they would look at you as a fellow authority and the more they engage with you, the more authoritative you become because they lend some of their credibility by even acknowledging you. Do you see how this works?

Step #7: Do Free Shout-Outs to Get “on the Radar”

As the old saying goes, for you to receive, you must first give. When you’re trying to maximize your level of expertise on Instagram, don’t think that just because a handful of people have become emotionally invested in what you’re doing that you are an Instagram star. Don’t put the cart before the horse.

Cement your niche position by doing lots of shout-outs for free. Don’t expect anything in return. The key here is as long as these people are already credible, and they have a distinct following, and they are solidly within your niche, then they’re fair game. You give them free publicity on your account by shouting out to them.

Don’t think that just because you’ve given one shout-out, automatically that person would it up and pay attention and give you love in return. It doesn’t work that way. Oftentimes, you have to give shout-outs several times for them to even notice.

Still, if you keep this up, not only do you build credibility for your brand because you make it abundantly clear to people following your account that you are aware of, and you engage with these people, that you are an authority.

Step #8: Respond to Every Comment

People like to be made to feel that they matter. That’s the bottom line. Treat others the way you want to be treated. You want to be treated with respect, right? You want to be made to feel that you matter, right? So, do yourself a big favor and respond to every comment.

Don’t make people feel generic by copying and pasting the same response over and over again. Mix it up.

Ask them about what’s going on in their lives. Ask them personal questions. In other words, let them know that your acknowledgement is specific to them, and that they’re special.

You may be thinking that this is a lot work. You may be thinking that this is a hassle. Well, it may be but it’s worth it. Why?

When people feel that they’re somebody when they’re engaging with your account, other accounts pale in comparison. They may be following other celebrities on Instagram, but they’re just another face in the crowd to those celebrities. You, on the other hand, put them on a pedestal. It appears that they matter to you. So, who do you think they would be more emotionally loyal to? Who do you think that they’re more likely to talk about on Instagram?

Make no mistake about it responding to every comment and engaging with your followers is one of the most powerful ways to build a solid-gold brand on Instagram and any other social media platform for that matter.

Keep the steps above in mind if you want to build a solid brand on Instagram. Make no mistake about it almost anybody can post a photo on Instagram that can go viral. That’s not the issue. The issue is to build a brand that people will feel loyal to. If you’re able to do that, then it’s only a hop, skip and a jump away for you to get a nice sponsorship for your brand assuming you picked the right niche.
